Our History
Express Messenger Systems, Inc. & California Overnight
OnTrac started in 1991 as California Overnight, a division of its now 60-year old parent company Express Messenger Systems, Inc. EMS was formed from the acquisitions of several small Canadian and American courier companies, and saw an opportunity to provide a more an affordable next-day service from Los Angels to San Francisco.
The first California Overnight customers were architects and lawyers, and we quickly grew to help other industries reduce their shipping spend without sacrificing next-day delivery.We expanded to all of California, and then added Nevada in 1996, Arizona in 1997, and Oregon and Washington in 2005. We knew that we had outgrown the California Overnight name, and began preparations for a name change.
California Overnight, OnTrac & 65 Million Consumers
In 2008, California Overnight changed its name to OnTrac. It was the name of our shipping software, which had already been in use for over a decade. OnTrac marked the first year of its new name by opening service to Utah. We then added Colorado in 2011, and Idaho in 2013.The 8-state service area gave customers an opportunity to quickly reach over 65 million consumers without paying the extra fees charged by national carriers.
Parcel Logistics & Beyond
Today, OnTrac connects companies to local delivery professionals through leading technology, advanced material-handling, and excellent customer service. In 2014, OnTrac launched DirectPost, a USPS Package Consolidation Service. We are a SmartWay Transport Partner, a USPS Workshare Partner, and are integrated with over thirty multi-carrier software providers.Our promise is “On Time Delivery For Less,” and we stand behind our commitment by offering a Money-Back Service Guarantee.

I worked with Adam on 9/20/2017 and he offered to do cross-docking services for us. We had 10 pallets of inserts that tipped over after a harsh braking event. He was not able to restack the pallets for lack of manpower and short notice but he was still willing and helpful to bring on staff the next morning to help. We found another solution due to the time-sensitive nature of the problem but Adam offered his services for cross-docking any time going forward. 5-stars.
